The Beginnings
Wyoma Farm was founded in 1976 by Gary, a young man with dreams of Wyoming’s vast plains, soaring mountains, and cowboy lifestyle. Inspired by the state, Gary named his farm Wyoma, blending his aspiration with his new reality. Alongside his wife Pam, Gary worked tirelessly to make their sheep and beef farm profitable, bucking the trend of transitioning to dairy farming.
Family Legacy
Gary’s dedication and hard work were passed down to his son Karl, who took over the farm in 2016. To this day, the family manages all the shearing and wool sorting themselves, preserving the traditional skills and deep knowledge that Gary imparted. However, the value of strong wool has dramatically declined, making it more of a cost than a commodity.
Rediscovering Wool
As a Biology teacher and environmental enthusiast, I saw the potential to transform this situation. While striving to reduce plastic use in our household, I rediscovered the superior qualities of wool over synthetic fibers. Wool’s natural properties made it a far better alternative, offering comfort, warmth, and durability.
Innovation and Sustainability
Determined to add value to our wool and help combat plastic pollution, I taught myself to sew and began experimenting with new uses for our wool. Beyond traditional wool bedding and jerseys, I sought to create innovative woolen products that offer sustainable alternatives to plastic-based items.
