Random Farm is a small farm in Wairarapa where we focus on ethically-produced natural coloured fleece and roving. We breed, raise, and select our sheep specifically for handcrafters using regenerative farming practices. We are members of the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association of New Zealand. We have a Facebook page called Random Farm that chronicles our farm, its activities, and the adventures of its residents.

Our flock is small and all our sheep have names. We shear our own sheep and prepare the fleeces ourselves to ensure the utmost care is taken with the animals' welfare and their precious fibre.

Most are romney with a micron range of 30 to 36 but we have a crossbred flock which includes some corriedale, finn, and other breeds that produce interesting fibre. This micron range is generally most suitable for outerwear, blankets, socks, and upholstery but we are breeding for softness and some of our fleece is suitable for next-to-skin. Descriptions include our suggestions for purpose and details of the qualities of the fibre.

We sell fleece by the name of the sheep so if you like the fibre you purchase, you can come back and find more from the same sheep. Wool is packed in recycled materials where possible to reduce waste.

Raw fleece is sold in 500g lots. Yield for this type of wool is conservatively 70-75% so you can expect to get at least 350g of washed fleece per 500g purchased.

Roving is ready to spin and all usable. It is sold as 100g balls so you can buy just the right amount.

If you wish to purchase roving or fleece in larger amounts (500g or 1kg for roving, 1kg lots or the whole fleece for raw fleece) please contact us to create a listing for you.
