This mug features my own high-resolution digital sketch based on one of my favourite Aotearoa native plants, with distinctive heart-shaped leaves and is known for its rongoā/medicinal properties.

About this plant:
Kawakawa (Piper Excelsum) is a small shrub, growing up to six metres tall, found in coastal and lowland forests of New Zealand. It prefers shaded, moist environments. Recognisable by its heart-shaped leaves with distinctive holes caused by leaf-eating caterpillars, kawakawa holds significant medicinal value for Māori. The leaves and fruit can be used to treat wounds, digestive issues, and toothaches. Its leaves are also used in ceremonial and ritual practices. Kawakawa’s aromatic leaves contain bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory properties.
