A bit about this map - In the east, the Chatham rise stretches all the way out towards the the Chatham islands, never dropping below 500m deep. Kaikoura sits just above this rise, and the deep gully makes it possible to see whales here close to shore. In the north-east corner sits the Kermadec trench, showing where the alpine fault line extends through.
