Handwoven and -dyed NZ merino shawl wrap
Building Blocks. Handwoven shawl featuring geometric blocks of colour in a star twill design.
This piece was part of my portfolio submitted for the New Weaver Award 2024, of which I was the recipient.
The idea was to create a wrap or blanket using a large repetitive pattern. I chose a star blocked twill. The colour change was in the middle of the repeat in both warp and weft. This created an interesting diamond intersection between all of the colours.
Three different colours were used in the warp of the shawl – natural, gold and tan. The shawl was woven in three different primary colours: green, red and blue, with off-white bordering. The blocks of colours create movement in the cloth.
The perfect companion for sitting on the veranda in the evening or morning, drinking coffee or sipping wine coolers! Perfect for an evening out, or snuggling on the sofa or deck. It can be worn as a boho poncho with belt, as a stole, or wrap. The large size is perfect for cuddling in to, offering comfort to the wearer.
The shawl is extremely soft, drapey and warm.
The shawl has been hand washed and dried, then pressed.
Materials: 100% fine NZ merino. Hand dyed. Hand twisted fringe. Hand wash only.

This one-off piece is Work 148. I never weave the same cloth or item twice. Every piece is unique and numbered, every creation has a story to tell.
The Merino wool I use has been farmed, processed, milled and spun in the South Island of NZ. This is the highest quality undyed base yarn I can buy in NZ. Merino wool comes from our Merino sheep and is renowned for its exceptional properties: its fantastic softness, durability, cooling/heating and breathability. The fibres of Merino are softer, finer and more sensitive than many other fibres – the main difference to other wools.
Dimensions: width 25 3/4″ – 65.5cm // length w/o fringe 58″ – 147cm // fringe 4″ – 10cm. Brooch private.
Entirely bespoke designed, and high quality finished. Made by me in a smoke-free home.
