ARTIST STATEMENT

The little black robin (Karure/Kakaruia/Chatham Island robin) is endemnic to Chatham Islands, New Zealand and was brought back from the brink of extinction by dedicated Conservationists. The species was moved to a predator free island and now has a population of approx. 300. Unbelievably they had been reduced to one breeding female, ‘Old Blue”. She lived to double the usual Black Robin age (14 years). ‘Old blue’ was helped out by the Tomtit, who mothered her eggs for her until the fledgings hatched and were returned to Mum and Dad Black Robin.

This artwork has a special meaning to me personally – the top of the feather cloak/kakahu is bound at the top by a band/taniko design which represents my home roots. Although I now live in Southland I was blessed to come from a loving farming family based in Te Aroha. We lived on Rawhiti Road – Rawhiti meaning East - the dot in the band/taniko representing the compass. The small farming district was named Mangaiti, meaning small stream – represented by the two bands top and bottom of the band/taniko. Te Aroha Mountain is represented by the diamond shape on the band/taniko, and most significantly, the love heart shape represents the love/aroha I have for my family, home town, New Zealand and its flora and fauna.

Enjoy!
