Swan plants are most well known as being the food of the monarch caterpillar, and their distinctive seed pods have led to an amusing range of common names: hairy balls, balloon plant, balloon cotton-bush, nailhead, or bishop's balls! Swan plant is a species of dogbane and is native to southeast Africa.

They are happiest with full or part sun, moderate watering, and well drained soil, and will quickly become populated (and stripped, if you're not careful) by monarch caterpillars. The art of keeping your swan plants alive (and raising a healthy, well-developed batch of monarch butterflies) lies in population control.

Sow in trays, or direct outside once all chance of frost is gone. Prune and cover in autumn if you're in a frosty area.
