Kohab Ruru (Morepork) Birdhouse

The Kohab Ruru Wooden Birdhouse has been specially designed to give safe, warm shelter to New Zealands native Ruru, or Morepork Owl.

Adding a Ruru birdhouse to your garden is a great way to support and encourage your local native owls. Not only are you providing a safe nesting box, you also get to connect more with those you kohabit your space with and have the joy of watching generation after generation of new bird life.

The Ruru likes a large nesting site so the Kohab Ruru Birdhouse replicates this natural nesting preference.

Setting up your birdhouse:
Once your birdhouse is easily assembled you will need to add 5cm deep of small bark chips. These are easily available at garden centres.

This is a DIY Ruru Birdhouse kitset. It is New Zealand made from strong high-quality marine plywood with thick walls and roof making it watertight as well as warm and snug. It has a slide-in side opening for easy cleaning and good floor ventilation to keep moisture levels low.

All Kohab birdhouses come in a kitset and are quick and easy to assemble. Due to the size of this birdhouse, it's a two-person job. Simply slot the pieces together and hammer a few nails into the part-drilled holes. We supply stainless steel nails and sturdy mounting screws.

We use high-quality marine plywood rather than tantalised wood, which contains toxins that can be harmful to bird life. Marine plywood will last outside for up to 10 years. However, as with all outside wood products, you can extend the life span of your birdhouse with a little bit of love. We recommend sealing it with raw Linseed Oil. This is safe for wildlife and easily found in large DIY stores.
