Ceramic Sea Shell Earring

During one of my walks along Pines Beach near my home in Kaiapoi, I found a tiny, perfectly formed sea shell. I took it back to my studio, and began experimenting with different materials to see if I could find a way to turn that tiny shell into something I could use to make jewellery with.

The colour and fine detail on these earrings leads most people to think they are real shells. But no! It took months of trial and error, but I finally succeeded in creating a tiny ceramic shell that was the perfect weight, size, and colour for stud earrings.

My earrings are made from NZ clay, and every little shell has been invidually created, kiln fired twice, and finished with a clear glaze. Because they are made and finished entirely by hand, each pair of earrings is slightly different from the next.

Size: 10mm (approximately)

The backs, posts, and butterfly nuts are stainless steel (glued to the back of the shell with 2-part epoxy)
