‘Tarred and Feathered’ appropriates the yellow wallpaper from Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s iconic story of the same name, as a space that embodies paranoid visions and domestic confinement in its claustrophobic patterning and institutional hue.
Gilman’s story combines elements of the gothic mode with a proto-feminist critique, a sensibility that I develop visually through establishing an uneasy relationship between vanitas art and the tradition of drawing from life using a (female) model in a passive role.
Mental illness as a theme is reflected both in the title and in the formal properties of my work. The obsessiveness and rituals that often accompany such illness are indicative of an overwhelming need to control chaos, and maintain a rigidly composed facade - everything in its place. Line is particular, meticulous, almost stifling, and the wallpaper has soaked through into the frame, an insidious invasion trapping the figure in the ground and the ground in the figure.

All my works are printed on Epson Watercolour art paper using archival quality inks - and of course the watermark you see onscreen does not appear on the print itself. Each print is individually hand-signed and numbered, and comes with its very own certificate of authenticity. 'Tarred and Feathered' also has gold detailing painted by hand in gilding wax.
Your print will be unframed, packaged in a cardboard mailing tube and sent via New Zealand Post, which takes 1-2 days for South Island postage and 1-3 days for North Island. I'll mail the package within 3 working days of your payment clearing.
